Henry Chu is a Hong Kong based new media artist / interactive web designer. Henry set up his own design studio pill & pillow (pillandpillow.com) in 2004. He has received numerous awards including 2 Gold awards and 3 Judge’s Choice Awards in the HKDA Awards 07, 7-time Favourite Website Awards(FWA) winner, Gold award(2007) of Hong Kong independent Short Film & Video Awards in the single-screen based interactive category, and a Gold award in the London International Advertising Awards.

Security Machines



Today we are surrounded by terrorist threats. Security measures are made to avoid attacks. There will be more security checks, when we have more possessions to protect. When we are passing the checks, we invulnerably expose ourselves and our belongings to other eyes, which usually belong to some kind of authority.

I setup an array of used computer at the entrance to mimic the security check, but this time without the presence of authority. I want to see whether another kind of dialogue will be generated.

The Security Machines are a group of individual computers, and an identical programme is running on each of them. The software is a realtime ASCII-art converter, which will convert the webcam image to ASCII code patterns. The color reflects how much CPU power is used.

The computers used to run the program are second-hand or used. Their configuration is random.

多得我們對恐怖主義的恐懼，今日到處都有保安檢查 - 當擁有和建立得愈多，我們便需要更多的保安檢查。我們經過這些檢查時，都不情願地向掌權者暴露一定程度的私隱。
這些機器就是去模擬保安檢查，不過當中沒有掌權者這個角色 - 我想看看當中人和機器有沒有衍生其他的交流。

<機 . 場 . 安檢>是一群並列但獨立的電腦, 每部電腦都執行著同一個軟件. 這個軟件把視訊轉變成ASCII碼, 而顏色也隨著電腦CPU的負荷改變.

這些電腦都是二手或回收的, 它們的配置都不同.
